Earlier this month Kurt Zouma received a red card for a horrific challenge on Sochaux player Thomas Guebert. The Sochaux player ended up with a double leg-break potentially ruling him out for the rest of the season.
Following the red card the French League’s disciplinary committee issued St Etienne’s Kurt Zouma with a ten match ban. This action could deter some Premier League clubs from making a move for the central defender. Such news has harmed Zouma’s reputation.
Liverpool were one of the club’s monitoring Zouma, and The Express reported a few months ago that Liverpool would be Zouma’s preferred choice of destination if he were to move. A move never materialised and Liverpool instead signed Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho. Zouma has only recently turned 19 though and should still be in the minds of Liverpool.
The club has already had to deal with Luis Suarez’s recent disciplinary actions, and he himself had to endure a ten-match ban recently after biting Branislav Ivanovic. Bringing another player with a ten-match ban on his CV could bring unwarranted attention to the persona of Liverpool Football Club.
Both Manchester City and Manchester United had been targeting the Frenchman tipped to be a future captain of the country by Didier Deschamps. The Mail said that perhaps now Zouma will find himself limited to a move to a mid-table side in the Premier League rather than the elite clubs.
Manchester City haven’t been convincing in defence this season, and could look past the ten-match ban. After all, he clearly didn’t intend to cause any harm, and sometimes these unfortunate events happen in football. It doesn’t mean there was any malice. If anything it just shows, that Zouma is still learning and still has some way to go before he is an established defender.
Instead of scuppering a move to the Premier League, Zouma’s red card could instead signal his last game for St Etienne. With the ban ruling him out of action until January, he may have left the French side by the time he is able to play again. Zouma has been hotly tipped for a number of years now, and the top clubs will have watched him progress through the French youth teams.
A lot of scouts will know Zouma’s all-round game and therefore shouldn’t be affected by one reckless challenge. So perhaps that was the last time St Etienne fans will see Kurt play. Some clubs may have been put off by the challenge, but I still expect there to be a big fight between top European clubs racing to get his signature.
