Football Manager out today: Why this game means so much to so many

The most popular and time consuming management sim is back! Share your Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Mansfield Town stories with us.

Football Manager 2014, previously Championship Manager, is the culprit for many lost hours, late nights, and brilliant memories in my life. Some may say I’m sad, but fellow Football Manager fans know how easy it is to get caught up inside this game.

I have been playing this simulation for around 15 years now, and have countless stories ranging from managing Fleetwood Town to Borussia Dortmund. As a child we all want to be a professional footballer. Then as we grow older we all think we can do a better job than other managers out there. This game gives you the chance to do just that.

The makers at Sports Interactive somehow manage to make the game more in-depth, more realistic and more addictive each year without making it over complicated. Playing this game allows you to forget about other things on your mind, and to just focus on how you are going to mould a team capable of world domination. There aren’t many things better than finding a young gem from Scandinavia and developing him to be a world beater.

Stories arising from this series range from people conducting their own post-match interviews on the bus to work, to wearing a suit for important games. Some people have even said that they play certain songs such as ‘Abide with me’ for the FA Cup Final, or the Champions League theme tune when appropriate.

One of my recent achievements was guiding Wales to the Euro 2020 final. Simon Church and Sam Vokes led the way. After beating Portugal, Croatia, Germany and England along the way I faced Switzerland in the final certain of success. A 1-0 defeat followed and it was an awful feeling that I still don’t think I have recovered from. On the way to the final, I played the Welsh national anthem before each game to get a proper feeling of the momentous occasion.

Whether you just played the early versions of Championship Manager or have played them all, we all have memories. Tonton Zola Moukoko, Ibrahima Bakayoko, Taribo West, Mark Kerr, Cherno Samba and many more all achieved career highlights on this game, and are thought of as legends by many across the world.

Miles Jacobson, and the other creators at Sports Interactive create the perfect game for football lovers to test their management skills. They give us the belief that in the real world, we could win a whole load of trophies. Without this game there would be a major hole in my life.
