Talksport report that Alan Pardew may be lining up a move for Micah Richards to provide competition for Mathieu Debuchy
Micah Richards‘ career seems to have stalled a bit at Manchester City. Bursting onto the scene as a promising 17-year-old he became a key player for them, even captaining the side at some points. He also was an England regular under Steve McClaren but due to a combination of injuries and multiple signings at City he hasn’t quite progressed as he would have liked to.
A move away from the Etihad could be on the cards, and if it were to happen he would have numerous suitors both home and abroad. With a place in England’s World Cup squad still in his sights, a January move could be just what he needs. Newcastle could be a viable option for Richards. With Glen Johnson injured for now Richards could put pressure on Kyle Walker for a starting spot. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones aren’t quite at an international standard for the right-back position just yet.
The Magpies currently have Mathieu Debuchy at right-back, with Davide Santon able to cover. However Debuchy has not set St James’ Park alight since his move from Lille last January. More was expected of him and he has been rather error prone. Therefore Pardew could look to Richards in order to strengthen that area and provide some competition for Debuchy. He would also provide some competition for the central defensive positions with Fabricio Coloccini’s future still uncertain.
Newcastle’s team is currently full of Frenchmen and Pardew has said that he would like more of a British core to the side. Richards could be available for a relatively modest price. He is still only 25 and would be keen to kick on in order to get his career back on track. However he must consider whether it would be a stable move for him, after all who knows what will happen next as regards to Mike Ashley and Joe Kinnear? Richards could have better alternatives.
It remains to be seen whether Manuel Pellegrini would want to see Richards leave, but 20-year-old Reece Wabara has impressed on loan at Doncaster Rovers and could be set for a recall in January.
